Beckham #7 Ranked MLS Foreign Player
By: jen | May 16th, 2008I found this interesting piece on foreign players and their impact in MLS. Beckham is ranked #7, with the reasoning below:
7- David Beckham, LA Galaxy
Despite the hullabaloo about the “Beckham effect,” it has been a mostly off the field phenomena. Beckham needs good players around him to excel and in MLS no team has enough good players for Beckham to have the impact he did with Man United or Real Madrid. (Especially the LA Galaxy who have less serviceable players than any team in either the Mexican top flight or MLS) He can turn in a moment of brilliance and if this league was of a better quality he’d be #1 on this list because nobody on the planet can do what he can, but in MLS his talent is largely wasted.
As much as I wish I could disagree, I can’t. The LA Galaxy don’t have the players needed to showcase Beckham’s abilities. Landon Donovan and Carlos Ruiz, when he returns, are capable of making magic with Beckham. But two players out of 10 (9 if we don’t count the keeper) aren’t a lot to work with.
It makes me wonder, did he know this coming into MLS? Is he satisfied with it? His desire to promote soccer, the league, continue to grow David Beckham Academies — all of these are being realized. But soccer playing — beautiful, intelligent, creative, winning soccer — his talent is often wasted.
As a fan of his soccer play, I wish I could see more of his true abilities with the supporting players he needs. Since his move to L.A his success off the pitch has been inarguable. But is that enough for him? And is that enough for his fans?

I agree. When you watch some of the old Real Madrid games it’s sheer Poetry. Hopefully some of the team’s better Talent will go on improving and we’re able to add more strength where it’s needed:)
