Beckham at Wembley

By: jen | May 27th, 2008

I’m looking forward to Wednesday’s friendly against the US. Being American, and a big Landon Donovan fan, I’m not sure who to root for. It doesn’t really matter to me who wins, I just want to see some great soccer. Hopefully Capello will get some better looks at his team and will begin to settle on a core 15 or so going into World Cup qualifying. I’m looking forward to seeing England pull it together, and I know that Beckham can be a great influence for that, both on and off the field. I have a few thoughts about Beckham and Bentley over at the LA Galaxy page.

I’ve also found a great article by Glenn Davis for the Houston Chronicle discussing Beckham’s impact on the MLS and soccer in America. I found that the article echoed my own thoughts on several points, including critics of Beckham’s play. Here in an excerpt below. Oh, and catch the game on ESPN Classic.

“Maybe you were one of the many who believed Beckham’s on-field impact would be limited to his famous free kicks. Many pundits and commentators have made the mistake of calling him one-dimensional. Even more claimed he would not be able to stay interested in MLS and would not adapt to playing with teammates whose names weren’t Zindeine Zidane, Ryan Giggs or Roy Keane.”

This is my first post in the blog. First of all great job Jen!
Talking about last night game,it was nice performance from Galaxy captain…does it sound good? lol Ok,Becks created few chances and assisted the goal for Terry,in second half we all could compare Bently’s delivery to Backham’s…Bently has a lot of job to do..so Becks still has a few caps to come and maybe even 2010 WC,who knows: right now his game is a good game.
At the begining of the match he’s got glass box with golden cap from Bobby Charlton his biggest hero and biggest critic.
Have a look there are 22 years between two pics.Who would ever imagine!!!!! Life is the best script writer, isn’t it?

Mag, those are too cute!!! Also, it was clear there was a plan for Becks and Bentley to each do 1/2 as Becks changed into civvies during half-time. Remember he is the only player in the middle of his season, and the only one who was playing on less than a week’s rest — whatever you say about Capello, he is smart enough not to risk his, or another team’s, player’s health on a friendly…unlike other managers I won’t mention ;-) .

Bentley has the heart, and has a good eye, but I hope accuracy can still come with practice. He is not THAT young like Walcott.

I also was suprised that he started at all,I thought he will be 70th minute sub because he missed first days of training with the team+played with LA few days ago+flight+…you know, eurosport said Capello prefers Bently on the right…losers..just Capello knows what he prefers, lol. Can we hope he will be captain against Tabaco? Would be nice for him. Hmmm Gerrard will, but who knows…

And Bently-he is young and promising but in NT just current form matters…since 2004 they talk about SRF,after that Lennon and now Bently. One day Becks will be out no doubt about that, but till he produces goals game after game he will collects his caps.

Hi Jen, hope you’re feeling better. Sorry this is from the Mirror, but I heard Capello’s press conference and his quote is accurate. I was hoping he would be the manager to make England a real squad, and the end of his comments make me optimistic — regarding all the positions, but right-mid for the purpose of this blog:

That’s a great link-up, Diane! Thanks! And I will add it to my newest post.

Capello makes a good point: Tactically there will be times when Beckham is the ideal winger, and other times he won’t be. That’s okay.

Well, now I’m going to go quote myself. :)
