Beckham’s 70 Yard Goal
By: jen | May 25th, 2008What a crowd pleaser!!
This goal made me all giggly, warm, and fuzzy inside. What a fun goal, destined for highlight reels everywhere.
In Andrea Canales’ interview with Landon Donovan, he had this to say about the goal:
“Honestly, I told David, ‘I’d probably put that out for a throw-in somewhere,’ just because you get so excited and the ball is moving and you don’t know what you’re going to do,” a still-incredulous Donovan said. “When [Beckham] hit it, you could just tell — he hit it so clean. There’s nobody else I’d want hitting that, for sure. Maybe goalies will think twice before coming out on him again. It doesn’t help their stats.”

Hey, Jen. Do you know how the goal of the week voting works? Do people vote more than once? All the goals are pretty good this week, but even if Becks isn’t winning, my next choice wouldn’t be McManus. He’s got 50+ %, Beckham has 30+ %, and the others are hardly registering (don’t tell anyone, but I think the Lopez goal ranks pretty high on the list).
Beckham gets enough attention in the league and its nice for the other players to get noticed, but it does interest me how many people think Beck’s goal was an easy shot. They don’t seem to notice that he did have to go out right to avoid two defenders and bent it into the center of the net from that distance. Your player’s eye did, but I’m surprised that others who should be able to see something that obvious, don’t. Oh well…nothing new.

GASP. Forget the voting, how did all of us moms (and generic worriers) miss this!?:

Although, since it seems to be the second half, I guess I could add “with a boo boo on the striking ankle” to those anyone can do it claims.

Good points Diane (sorry, I’m just getting to this). I DO think McManus’ goal was the better goal. But yeah, any other week and I think Becks’ goal would win. It wasn’t an impossible shot, but it wasn’t a piece of cake either. As you said, he had to bend it and place it from that distance. If the ball had gone into the goal on one of the far corners of the goal I would have been less impressed (well, a bit anyway), but the fact that that puppy went right down the center of the goal? Impressive!
On a related note. I don’t know when appreciating Beckham became “hype,” but I don’t like it. I think that will be another post here soon.
