Word is that the contract is fairly watertight through this year and that Beckham's escape clause doesn't kick in till after the 2009 season. Also, LA has nothing to gain by letting Beckham go. Beckham and all MLS players are technically owned by the league and not by the individual teams, and the salary cap is tight. Even a huge transfer fee wouldn't benefit the Galaxy the way it would a European team, because a) they wouldn't get all the money -- MLS would probably get at least a third, and b) with the salary cap, it would be hard to use transfer money in a way where the benefits would outweigh the losses of losing a Beckham. Beckham increases MLS and Galaxy revenue substantially. And this is true even if he's sulking and miserable on the bench. I'm very curious to see how the next few months will play out.
