My Thoughts Exactly

By: jen | May 6th, 2008

freekick2.jpgI was checking the MLS Goal of the Week voting and ran across a great post from Dan Loney over at Big Soccer. Becks is currently losing in the GOTW rankings. Is there a Beckhamania backlash among MLS fans? Surely, of all of the goals nominated this week Becks’ two goals are one and two. Is that arguable? Sure. I’m not always right (ask my husband).

So have we become used to the Beckham bend already? Is it nothing special that he dips and bends it, as in the first goal, like none other in this league? I know where he’s striking the ball. I know what kind of spin he’s putting on it. I actually like to spend my precious kid-free time analyzing his technique — it’s fun! But the day we find not-much-of-note in his scoring ability is the day I make the WNT because I bent one over a wall of other 30-somethings two years ago. C’mon people, love him or hate him, let’s be honest about his performance.

After looking at all the nominated goals, it is quite apparent, to me at least, that Beckham’s two goals are the best of the bunch. It’s sad to see that these goals by Becks are being shunned by the majority of the fans voting in the poll – you can add up the vote total for both goals and he still is, as of this moment, 5% behind. Some MLS fans are letting their envy and jealousy get in the way of fair and objective analysis. Shame.

David Beckham’s natural ability for free-kicks and corner kicks are, of course, well known and can be researched not just from the ones LA Galaxy fans get to enjoy – but, ManU fans and Real Madrid fans, as well. His two goals at MLS game against RSL were brilliant. The curve – the trajectory – the finish… sensational football (soccer). Why his goals are not getting the number of votes it deserves… Well, I believe many MLS fans want other people to win GOTW. Jen… I’m sure you know that in sports, much like in life (even among our friends), human nature encompasses all sorts of choices – many of which are primarily based on emotion and self-reward. At this point in the MLS season (the 6th week, I believe)… many MLS fans right now view that there has not been enough time that has passed for a soccer super-star like David Beckham to “warrant” another award or praise for his gift(s). Sad, but true (in my opinion). But, those of us who are LA Galaxy fans… we are bowing down, kneeling (perhaps) to the soccer gods… thanking the superfluous deities that Sir David decided to cross the “pond” and establish roots in Los Angeles. Thanks, David – we luv ya!!!

yeah..i hate to see the current votes of the GOTW! as i have askes before..are they blind? or are they just getting blind PURPOSELY..or are they just ignorance ppl in football (soccer)? seeing the results..i believe the GOTW this time is not being voted by the true soccer fans..but more by the common fans, or the fans and the media who hate Becks! as Charles pointed out..they are voting based on emotion, not facts!

    aaarrgh..!
