Out of the Running

By: jen | June 3rd, 2008

Beckham is out of the running as long term captain for England, according to The Independent.  It looks as though Terry and Ferdinand are the finalists for the England armband.  It is also reported that, surprisingly, Becks would have been in contention for the job had he been based in England.

I dunno about that. There’s nothing in quotes. It’s possible that it’s just a rumor.

I agree Tommy. We’ll see how it plays out. But the reasoning that Becks is all the way in LA actually kinda makes sense. Of course, it could be just another way of “punishing” him for “selling out” and moving to MLS.

Don’t forget the coach. Capello doesn’t have that whole wounded England thing going. He’s been known to write off players who crossed him (as in they didn’t step on the pitch again until they went to another team), as he was about to do with Becks until he realized that it wasn’t Becks that had lied to him.

I believe he would have considered Beckham because he knows Beckham’s value in helping to coalesce a team, as we all witnessed in the role he played in motivating a horrifyingly demoralized R.M. to run for the title last year…even during the time when he was banned from training with the rest of the team! A great cheerleader, that one. But that’s when the players are together everyday. Unlike most national coaches, Capello has the luxury that most of his team at least play in the same country — and on a relatively small plot of land at that. During this time when he wants to work on the players’ heads as much as anything else he might simply want the captain to be someone closer by. Yeah, they’re all famous for compulsively texting each other — hotel rooms get pretty boring — and everyone talks about getting Becks’ good luck messages before games (this could extend to you too, jen if you can just get on the speed dial!), the distance might be a consideration in that context.

i agree with Tommy. nowadays..i will only trust Capello alone. i’ll read the media only for the updated news/events. Capello is a man full of surprises, which he had just demonstrate by appointed Becks as skipper again last week. heck..even the media all over surprised by that! ;D
but i agree slightly that playing in US, with totally different/clashing schedule with the internationals, might reduced Becks chance to be full time skipper again. but hey, with Capello..we’ll never know!
